Abdominal etching, also known as six-pack surgery or high-definition liposuction of the abdomen, is an advanced body contouring technique that creates visible, natural-looking abdominal muscle definition. By selectively removing fat from around the underlying muscle groups, the procedure reveals the "six-pack" and linea alba that were previously hidden beneath a thin layer of resistant fat.
Unlike standard liposuction, which removes fat uniformly, abdominal etching uses VASER ultrasound-assisted liposuction to selectively sculpt the fat layer. Fat is removed from strategically mapped areas that correspond to the natural muscular anatomy — the intersections of the rectus abdominis and the oblique margins — while leaving the fat that lies over the muscle bellies largely intact. The result is a three-dimensional, naturally athletic appearance.
Abdominal etching is performed under general anesthesia or deep sedation and takes 2–3 hours. A compression garment is worn for 4–6 weeks. Most patients return to work within 1 week and to exercise within 4–6 weeks. Final six-pack surgery results become visible as swelling resolves over 3–6 months, revealing the sculpted muscular definition beneath.
