Breast reduction surgery (reduction mammoplasty) removes excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce breast size and reshape the breasts into a more proportionate, aesthetically pleasing form. Beyond the cosmetic benefits, breast reduction provides significant relief from the physical and emotional burden of overly large breasts — making it one of the highest patient satisfaction procedures in all of plastic surgery.
Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia and typically takes 2–3 hours. Various techniques are available depending on the degree of reduction needed, including the vertical (lollipop) technique and the inverted T (anchor) technique. In all approaches, the nipple-areola complex is repositioned to a higher, more youthful location. Excess skin is removed and the breast is reshaped for a natural contour.
A supportive surgical bra is worn for 6 weeks. Most patients experience significant swelling for the first 2–4 weeks. Normal daily activities can usually be resumed within 2 weeks, with full recovery taking 4–6 weeks. Final breast reduction results are visible within 3–6 months once all swelling has resolved and scars have matured.
