Otoplasty (ear pinning surgery) is a procedure that corrects the shape, position, and size of the ears. Prominent or protruding ears — commonly known as "bat ears" — are one of the most common physical characteristics that cause self-consciousness from childhood. Otoplasty delivers a permanent solution with highly predictable, natural-looking results.
Otoplasty is performed under local anesthesia (in adults) or general anesthesia (in children). Incisions are placed in the natural fold behind the ear, making scars completely invisible. The ear cartilage is reshaped and repositioned closer to the head using sutures. Surgery takes approximately 1.5–2 hours for both ears.
Ear cartilage reaches its adult consistency at around age 5–6, making this the earliest recommended age for surgery. Children benefit enormously from early treatment before starting school, avoiding potential social difficulties. Adults can undergo otoplasty at any age with equally excellent results.
A headband is worn for 2–4 weeks to protect the ears during healing. Mild swelling and discomfort are expected in the first week. Most patients return to school or work within 7–10 days. Final otoplasty results are permanent and ears retain their natural proportions throughout life.
